Daisy Chain
Definition: Method of propagating signals along a data bus in which the devices are connected in series. The signal is passed from one device to the next in order. The concept of a daisy chain scheme allows assignment of priorities based on location.
Data Acquisition System
Definition: A system that gathers data by digitizing and analog channels and storing data in digital form. .
Data Converter
Definition: An electronic circuit that converts analog signals to digital or digital to analog depending on the application.
Decibels
Definition: The ratio of two signals. Used to describe a signal level by comparing it to a reference level.
DDR (Memory)
Definition: Double Data Rate. Used to read data on both the rising and falling edge of the clock, achieving a faster data rate.
DDS
Definition: Direct Digital Synthesis. A way of digitally producing analog waveforms such as sine or arbitrary waveforms.
Debounce
A circuit that removes a ripple signal and provides a clean transition at the output. Used when electrical contact switches make and break contact.
Deterministic Jitter
Definition: A re-creatable jitter within a system. Also referred to as a bounded jitter.
Differential Remote Output
Definition: A Kelvin connection at a remote location to sense the output voltage and assist in controlling voltage at that point.
Digital Log Pot
Definition: Digital Logarithmic Potentiometer.
Differential Input Isolation
Definition: the isolation from signal HI to LO on a switching card.
Digital Signal Processor
Definition: A custom digital circuit that acts on digitized signals. Also referred to as DSP circuits.
Diode
Definition: Two-terminal device that passes current in only one direction. .
Distortion
Definition: An unwanted change in electrical signals.
Dither (Dithering)
Definition: A common technique to improve digitizing when quantization error or noise can no longer be considered as random.
DIU
Definition: Digital Interface Unit. Output screen of a system.
DMA
Definition: Direct Memory Access. Reads of writes data straight to the memory by bypassing the processor and bus.
DML
Definition: Data Management Language. A language that allows manipulation of a database. Commands such as CREATE and INSERT are data management language.
Differential Non-linearity (DNL)
Definition: Specification that occurs in data-converter manuals, specs, datasheets. DNL measures the deviation from the ideal.
DRAM
Definition: Random Access Memory that uses a non-breaking/continuous clock. In DRAM, when the clock stops, data is lost.
DSL
Definition: Mechanism to expand High Speed Digital Communications over a standard phone line.
Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum
Definition: A transmission technology used in wireless local access network transmissions where a data signal at the sending station is combined with a higher data-rate bit sequence that divides the user data.
Dense Wave Division Multiplexing
Definition: Technology by which frequencies of light carried on a single optical fiver are subdivided into discrete wavelengths allowing for greater transmission of data.
