This will protect your fingers from dangerous frost bites and prevent unnecessary refrigerant discharge into the atmosphere. For 30 years in the HVAC business, I did not even use use gloves until a few years ago when hooking and unhooking to the service ports. Not a good practice especially with todays higher pressure systems. Now, in addition to gloves, I find that the valve depressor core is a must as an additional to PPE. Its great especially in the tight hard to access situations. I found the 18993 to be solid and leak free. The only learning curve is to identify at what point and how far to turn inwards just before it depresses the valve (which I am still getting use to). This model also has a back stop that stops the flow through the side port which does not have a shrader in it.
