The Rigol DG4102 is two channel function / arbitary waveform generator to create high quality signals up to 100 MHz (Sine). Beside the analog output, the device includes an USB-Host- and an USB-device and a LAN interface.

The Rigol Function-generators have a sophisticated and easy to use interface and offer multiple functions for all tasks. The menu navigation is very intuitive and all functions and parameters are easy to locate thanks to the graphical interface.

DG4000 series is a multifunctional generator that combines many functions in one, including Function Generator, Arbitrary Waveform Generator, Pulse Generator, Harmonic Generator, Analog/Digital Modulator and Counter. All of the 3 models have two channels with complete equivalent functions and precisely phase adjustable, they are the real dual-channel signal generator.

  1. AC Power Input 
    This generator can accept AC power supply of 100-240V, 45-440Hz.Power Fuse: 250V, T2 A.
  2. LAN
    Connect the generator to the local area network for remote control throughthis interface. This generator conforms to LXI-C instrument standards and can quickly build test system with other devices to easily realize system integration.
  3. Security Lock Hole
    Users can use the security lock (buy it by themselves) to lock the instrumentat a fixed location.
  4. USB Device
    PC can be connected through this interface to control the generator remotelythrough PC software.
  5. 10MHz In/Out
    BNC female connector with 50Ω nominal impedance. The function of this
    connector is determined by the type of clock used by the generator. DG4000
    can use internal or external clock (refer to the introduction in Clock Source ).
    • When internal clock source is used, the connector (used as 10MHz Out)  can output 10MHz clock signal generated by the internal crystal oscillator  of the generator.
    • When external clock source is used, the connector (used as 10MHz In)  accepts a 10MHz external clock signal.
    • This connector is usually used to synchronize multiple instruments (refer  to the introduction in Sync).
  6. CH1: Mod/FSK/Trig
    BNC female connector with 50Ω nominal impedance. Its function is determined by the current working mode of CH1.
    • Mod:
      If AM, FM, PM, PWM or OSK is enabled for CH1 and external modulation source is used, this connector accepts an external modulation signal.
    • FSK:
      If ASK, FSK or PSK is enabled for CH1 and external modulation source is used, this connector accepts an external modulation signal (users can set the polarity of the signal).
    • Trig In:If CH1 is in sweep or burst mode and external trigger source is used, this connector accepts an external trigger signal (users can set the polarity of the signal).
    • Trig Out:
      If CH1 is in sweep or burst mode and internal or manual trigger source is used, this connector outputs a trigger signal with specified edge.
  7. CH2: Mod/FSK/Trig
    BNC female connector with 50Ω nominal impedance. Its function is determined by the current working mode of CH2.
    • Mod:
      If AM, FM, PM, PWM or OSK is enabled for CH2 and external modulation source is used, this connector accepts an external modulation signal.
    • FSK:
      If ASK, FSK or PSK is enabled for CH2 and external modulation source is used, this connector accepts an external modulation signal (users can set the polarity of the signal).
    • Trig In:
      If CH2 is in sweep or burst mode and external trigger source is used, this connector accepts an external trigger signal (users can set the polarity of the signal).

Standard high resolution counter function
These devices feature a standard high resolution frequency counter. It is able to measure the frequency, period, positive and negative pulse length, and the duty cycle – all at frequencies ranging from 1 µHz to 200 MHz.

Rigol DG4102

Have owned the Rigol DG4102 for approximately 9 months and it has been working well. Have no major complaints. Interface is easy to use. I use the unit for a lot of pulse work and when I first used the unit it defaults to duty cycle changes in 10% increments when you start using the wheel which allows you to a max of 90% or min of 10%. If you keep on using the wheel percentage does not decrease, you need to enter in a smaller step by keypad (such as 1%) and now the wheel scrolls in 1% increments. Sounds straight forward when I describe it but took a little while to figure out without reading the manual ? FYI, the lowest percentage duty cycle the pulse mode can go down to is 0.312%. Was hoping for a little lower percentage but has worked fine for me. Probably a way to get narrower pulses by using both channels but have not tried it.

Rigol DG4102 Function Generator Review

This function generator was purchased for our lab about a year ago and has been used extensively over that time. We've been very happy with it's flexibility and easy of use. The build quality is the usually excellent job Rigol does.

pros
- clean, easy user interface with 'hard' controls
- reliable, no problems in over a year of frequent use
- plenty of waveform settings that have been more useful than expected
- output is clean and very stable

cons
- some menu features in non-obvious places
- duty cycle options not as wide as would be nice but acceptable

If you're considering this unit get the brochure and user guide from Rigol, they're accurate and should provide accurate technical information to determine if the unit meets your technical requirements.

This unit does it's job easily and well allowing you to focus on getting the real work done.

RIGOL DG4102

The RIGOL DG4102 is a decent instrument.
I haven't found much to complain about.

Being a "Made in China" product there are the nominal issues with manuals and documentation. The grammar can be awkward at times. But, for the most part, you can figure out what they meant to say. You just have to cut them a little slack.

Also, The Chinese didn't just reverse engineer a single American product. They glummed features off several different products and merged them. They also added a number of additional bells and whistles. This results in a noticeably RIGOL user interface. You can see a little Tektronix here and a little HP there. But, if you are expecting a cloned knock off, you are going to be disappointed.

If you are willing to learn their interface, you will definitely find it worth your while.

I ran the box against some of our calibration standards. The HP8902A thought the basic modulations were ok.
AM is the least impressive.
At 100%, it was dead on.
As it goes down to 10%, significant errors are noticed.
It would still pass a non-critical calibration.
I've seen equivalent performance in other instruments.

FM was dead on.
The HP8902A was well pleased.

PM was - odd.
A lot of equip that passes thru here cranks out PM in rads (radians). And, they'll do multiple 10s of radians. The DG4102 does 2 pi radians (a little over 6) And, those radians are in degrees (all 360 of them).

Let's see...
The counter was a little fluky.
It was ok - I guess.
It does appear to periodically burp.
The display jumps quite a bit.
Also, the Chinese take an interest view of LSBs.
A lot of the reading fluctuations is due to tremendous number of trash LSBs on the display.
If you pin down the decimal point and relate the KHz, MHz scale, the digits that are jumping around actually quite small.
Also, the internal 10 MHz time base was running at about 10,000,012 Hz. This is nothing great compared to an ultra-stable temperature compensated reference - but, the instrument functions quite well with it.

The phase relationship between to two channels was excellent.

Harmonic Distortion for a sine wave 20 to 100KHz was almost nothing. (< .05% over most of the band).

The assortment of pre-installed arbitrary waveforms were impressive.

The included modulation modes quite impressive, too.

In terms of maximum frequency, modulation modes, arbitrary waveforms, stability, programmability, etc. - it meets or beats other instruments that are 3 to 6 times more expensive.

It is well made.
It is fairly easy to figure out.
It has built in help menus.
and, it is generally intuitive.

There isn't much to pick about.
Quite a bit of "bang for the buck" in this instrument.

Good Bang For The Buck

1st TEquipment purchase and 1st Rigol product. 5 stars to TE for customer service (phone order) and S&H.

Have been giving the generator a lot of "excercise" during the last 4 weeks. Everything is still working. Rigol application support has been responsive when contacted. I found some minor issues (not show-stoppers for me), Rigol confirmed them and reported them to their R&D team. Also, one spec on the data sheet should be tighter to be consistent with the other specs. Again, Rigol confirmed. In most cases, once I understand why something is happening, I can find a temporary or permanent work-around solution.

In summary, so far so good with my 1st Rigol experience. 4.5 stars.
