Best All-Around DMM for Electronics

I’m an electronics hobbyist who appreciates the adage “The Right Tool for the Job”. A multimeter is the most commonly used tool for analyzing electronics circuits and devices so I gave this purchase decision a lot of thought. The Greenlee DM-510A was an easy choice after considering my requirements and evaluating different models. Here is a summary of my key decision points for this model:

Voltage – This meter has 6000 counts which puts me in the sweet spot for best precision at 5V DC that I usually work with. I have tested my unit against a reference voltage source and it’s spot on.

Current – Supports low current measurements in the micro amp ranges which is useful for digital signal processing. The manual provides detailed specs for the burden voltage, which is as low or better than burden voltages in other meters. As needed, you can turn off auto-ranging and manually switch up to the next measurement range to lower the burden voltage. The tradeoff is one digit of precision but that still leaves me with more than sufficient precision for my needs.

Resistance – Provides accuracy on par with other high-quality meters (for the special case where you need to measure below one ohm, you would use a dedicated test meter that is optimized for very low resistance measurements in the milliohm ranges).

Future Needs – While I don’t need a temperature sensor right now, I might find it useful in the future and I won’t need to buy a separate device. Other capabilities of this unit include data logging (requires separate purchase of accessory) which most multimeters do not support and I’m already thinking about some potential applications. While I don’t currently work with higher AC voltage, this unit’s UL certification and True RMS capability provide confidence that it’s fully capable for use with AC measurements.

I spent a little more for my Greenlee DM-510A than I originally planned to but I’m satisfied that I got a lot of value for my purchase and I can rely on it as my needs grow in the future.
