Really impressed with the features of this scope. My needs so far have not taxed the limits of what it can do, but that's awesome.
Good physical buttons, easy to follow menus, good control and so far great performance.
Some minor things like settings not in the same place as other scopes, and some of the menu meanings take some playing to understand.
If you can spare the cash, this is a great upgrade and gives good value for the money.
NOTE: I was able to get some software upgrades to further increase functionality and value.

Really like the black modern look. It has seriously excellent specifications and there is no issue in understanding how to use this instrument. Great value for the money considering the included options for free! My only hesitancy is in the user interface responsiveness. I am accustomed to scopes that are super fast in response to user input and this area is very weak on the Rigol. I like the features, am not enamored with the channel 4 dark blue color choice. In general the persistence is fantastic and the features fantastic at the price! Wish for higher resolution (less noise) in voltage signal at low level - 8 bit is becoming a limiting factor. Wish for channel color selection. Wish for a user interface that offered faster response to input from the user, otherwise an awesome scope! Maybe Rigol can improve at least the responsivess and color choice in firmware.

No regrets whatsoever, I would absolutely buy it again if I could do it all over. Along with the functional bundle from Rigol, at no extra cost, and the MSO5000 user community boards explaining how to boost scope capabilities above specs, I definitely recommend the lower end of the MSO5000 series to anyone looking to buy a scope in the class/range. If one considers purchasing the same series scope but with all options enabled, then comparing the total price and functionality against some couple other similar competetive offerings, I would have to say the choice is not as clear-cut. But at the lower end, this is definitely the best of class scope to buy at this point in time. Heck, this is a 4-channel 8Gsps scope for under a grand! The only thing more I could wish for is the same but with 10 or 12 bit sampling. But hey, let's save some of the technology/cost miracles for another year...

I am only giving it 4 stars though as the primary reason I purchased it was for the included MSO5000-BND bus decoding and AWG options but after lodging my purchase with Rigol NA and being promised a 1 day response for the licence key its been almost 2 weeks and nothing, disappointing. Pound for pound, value for value, I think this is one of the best scopes out there for less than $1K! Feature packed! My only complaint is I wish it was using a more faster/powerful processor to give justice to all the features it can do. When acquiring at higher memory depth, the scope bogs/slows down in terms of user interface response (example, moving the trace up or down the screen). Love how I can connect an HDMI monitor and mouse and use/control it that way too.

Rigol has provided updates to address some reviewer concern(hi-res, feezing,etc). Full touch capabilities prove very useful because you can move everything around so easily and drag selection boxes on the screen. On screen keyboard and calculator inputs work very well. In my view, this is a huge bang for the buck scope.

A software-upgradable, network-attached, color touchscreen MSO 'scope with probes for $1k??!! I've held off on purchasing a "real" scope until I could really justify it's cost/use. When I started shopping, I was eyeing the DS1000 series, but in honesty the "black scope" caught my eye (I'm very visual, I'm a sucker for marketing, but no I didn't buy a scope because it was black with pretty colors - but it did attract my attention). My hobby-work is mostly digital - IOT R&D, reversing, and security. While I'm extremely happy with the 'scope, a good portion of my purchase decision is around future-proofing and potential resale - majority of my analog work only needs 2 channels, and currently I'm using stand-alone logic analyzers. At some point I hope to pick up either the LA probe set on ebay, or just build my own. The portability of the scope is so great compared to the 30lb HeathKit 'scope I grew up with. Will probably get a carrying case to protect the front. Really the biggest portability issue is not the scope, but the cabling/probes/etc to drag along. Anyways - super happy with this purchase. There's plenty of reviews (eevblog) on tech details - it's taken a bit to really get to competency with triggering as it can be a little finicky. Give it a chance of a few weeks and I think most will be extremely happy with this 'scope.

So far this scope has been solid, I personally like the new design style, the large screen is great to work with, sensible menus and intuitive controls. Having the options for logic analyzer and function generator with their own dedicated connectors allows me to save bench space and time. fans aren't too loud, probes feel nice, and has a fairly small footprint. Rigol has recently fixed a few bugs in the latest firmware and mine came with this already installed. This is my third scope (2nd Rigol ) and is now my daily driver.

- Overall an excellent value for anyone needing a general purpose scope or a moderately price-d step up from the DS1KZ series.

The touch screen works surprisingly well, although some spots can be slow to update as is the boot time at ~1min. Given they're using the Xynq platform that comes down to a matter of code polish. Using the screen for keyboard input is however excellent, and menu navigation is straight forward and intuitive.

Decoding works well, although there are some odd spots. Limited trace colors (shades of green, to be changed in an update I'm told), and the odd addition of "Data" to every packet. Having to go into a separate menu for trace movement is also funky compared to it's more expensive DS7K brother.

Math wise, the FFT isn't half bad and updates fairly quickly for real time viewing (provided you scope down to frequencies of interest). Math options are also fairly abundant and appear to work correctly. The color graded mode with FFT can take forever to fill out though, so your mileage may vary there.

As expected, community support is also so far huge for this scope. Folks are already messing with the internal code, and given it's a Linux kernel on an Xynq, it'll only get better. If this will be someone's hobby/home scope, I'd so far recommend it as a "hackers" scope. There's a lot of potential.

That said, while the vast majority of bugs are little software kinks that are being fixed even now, there's one that's been plaguing a fair number of people, myself included as well as my workplace (multiple MSO7Ks). There appears to be an issue where some scopes have defective low freq front end cals resulting in non-trivial overshoot on fast edges and signal modification that cannot be comped out by the end user. Rigol is apparently aware and working on the issue, but frankly it negates the use of the scope for measuring many types of signals accurately, and should not have made it past QC. I'd otherwise recommend the scope, but that has to wait until Rigol makes the fix and it isn't a game of Russian Roulette. Once they do, this'll be bumped up to 4 stars with a healthy "you should buy this, for sure" recommendation :)


UPDATE
Rigol has since released firmware to fix the overshoots and wonky front-end cal, as well as added multiple features.
HiRes mode is still a bit iffy, but many other requested features have made it in, such as significantly more color choices for the LA, better touchscreen performance, and numerous bug fixes. It seems Rigol is well invested into making
their new platform a contender.

Daniel at Rigol has been very helpful throughout the entire process, even forwarding some advance release firmware
to my workplace when we needed our MSO7k's fixed quickly. Overall I'm rather pleased with the whole experience now
and would recommend the MSO5k for anyone needing a solid mixed signal scope on a budget.
