An attenuator reduces the power of an electrical signal without distorting its waveform. An attenuator is the opposite of an amplifier; an amplifier provides gain while an attenuator provides loss, or gain less than 1. The dB rating of an attenutaor tells how much it reduces a signal; the higher the dB the more the signal is reduced. Attenuators also have frequency bandwidth ratings that specify what signal frequencies the atteuator can work with.
