Because of the prince this station is often recommended for more experienced or serious users, but it's actually very useful for beginners. Being able to set the temperature makes it harder to damage components while you develop technique, and the overall quality ensures that there are minimal distractions, like tips oxidizing early or the heating element dying. Very solid all around.

I have used weller wes at work for electronics and loved them, and they were used a lot.
I bought this to repair my old vintage Technics stereo rack amplifier. I knew it needed the solder joints redone, and would have cost me $50-$80 to have it done.
I bought the wes51 on sale for $90 and resoldered all the joints and it works great now. Almost like getting an iron for free by fixing it myself.
Iron heats up super fast, and nice to have a quality iron at home, instead of one of those radio shack $10 fixed temp irons.
I expect to not have to buy another iron for decades now.

Have had Weller soldering stations for longer than I care to admit, including a standard analog nonadjustable unit that is still going strong. When a friend's son needed a "real" soldering solution, I ordered this one as a Christmas present.

Now I'm jealous... this teen has a better soldering station than I do! This is a solid Weller product and I'm considering a midnight exchange for my older station. Nobody would notice, right? {grin}

Unless you really need a digital readout, save the ~$40 and buy this unit. If history is any indication, you'll never need to buy another one.

Very highly recommended.

After about 10 adjustments to the temperature, the plastic knob and wimpy trim pot inside will be ruined and you cannot adjust the temperature anymore. They should have put a larger durable potentiometer in it to adjust the temperature.
