TPI Temperature Instruments FAQ

What is the difference between J and K-type thermocouples?
J-type thermocouples have a different curve characteristic than K-type thermocouples, so they are not interchangeable. J-type thermocouples used to be more rugged, but that is no longer the case. K-type thermocouples are the most common type used today.

What is the difference between a thermistor and a thermocouple?
Thermistors are more accurate, but have a much shorter temperature range than thermocouples.

Are there other probe options?
Yes, you just need to identify the input connector for your temperature tester and the type probes that are compatible.

What is a T-type thermocouple?
T-type thermocouples are more accurate, but also more costly than K-type thermocouples. It is used in situations where higher accuracy is more important.

How is a dual input thermometer used?
A dual input thermometer allows you to measure the temperature at two locations AND calculates the difference. This is useful in HVAC-R applications.
