TPI Clamp Meters FAQ

Does a clamp-on meter measure anything besides amps?
All TPI clamp-on meters read AC/DC volts and resistance, as well as AC amps. The 296 also reads DC amps. The 290 reads AC/DC volts, resistance, AC amps, temperature, capacitance and frequency.

What do I need to do to measure AC amps in a power cord?
You need to isolate a single wire to be able to measure AC amps. You can do this with a line splitter (A202).

Can I measure anything besides AC amps with the jaws of my clamp-on meter?
The 290, 293, and 296 also measure frequency with the jaws. All other functions require the use of test leads.

Why do you put a 40-amp range on your clamp-on meters?
A 40-amp range gives you a resolution of 0.01 amps, which is ideal for measuring heat anticipators and small motors and gives you the best accuracy when reading less than 1 amp ( based upon the accuracy specification). Other meters with 0.1 resolution have a much wider accuracy specification and can give incorrect readings on low current measuring. TPI has a wide range of optional accessories that will enable the user to measure amps, temperature, pressure or CO.
