Light Meters

Light Meters, also called Illuminance Meters, are designed for measuring the amount of visible light emitted from a variety of light sources including fluorescent, metal halide, high-pressure sodium and/or incandescent sources. Just for comparison, a luminance meter measures the light being emitted from a particular area. That said, many illuminance meters also function as luminance meters given they use certain attachments. Dedicated Luminance meters may be found here Products > Radiometric > Luminance Meter

Light meters of this type are typically used to measure the illumination level in the interior of a building such as an office. The user is then able to make the best decision to either reduce or increase the output level of lighting fixtures in the building. This reduces the energy burden of the building by significantly increasing the efficiency of its lighting system. These light meters measure visible light in lux and foot-candles (fc).

Many of these meters also incorporate other environmental measurement functions such as air temperature and relative humidity.

Features to consider when buying a light meter

  • Measurement Range. This determines how bright of a light a meter can measure
  • Accuracy. Light meter accuracy is typically reported in percent of reading
  • Measurement Range Selection. Most light meters measure their full measurement range broken up into segments. Depending on the meter, the range can be selected automatically or manually
  • Types of Lighting. Incandescent, Fluorescent, LED
  • Multifunction capability. Some models will measure other parameters such as temperature, humidity, and air velocity
