FLIR Fluke 279 FC vs FLIR DM284

What is the difference between the FLIR DM285 and Fluke 279 FC

Comparison Guide

Overview

The FLIR DM285 and the Fluke 279 FC are thermal imaging multimeters. Both units combine the power of thermal imaging with the electrical troubleshooting tools you get from a digital multimeter. This allows you to visually see which components are hot from a distance, then check each one closely with the multimeter. Both tools help to make your work faster, safer, and easier.

Despite the similarities, there are some important differences between these two tools. One primary difference is the thermal resolution – the Fluke 279 FC has a 80 x 60 pixel thermal sensor, while the FLIR DM285 features a larger 160 x 120 pixel resolution sensor. This means that on average, the DM285 will provide a slightly better quality thermal image.

For Field of View, the DM285 provides 46° x 35° viewing while the 279 FC offers 36° x 27°.

There are other important differences too. For thermal imaging, the 279FC has a thermal sensitivity (NETD) of ≤200 mK while the DM285 is slightly more sensitive at ≤150 mK. This also gives the DM285 a slight edge in image quality. That said, the 279 FC gains some ground back with a temperature range of 14 °F to 392 °F, compared to the 14°F to 302°F range of the DM285. Both cameras feature fixed focus.

For the DMM portion of these tools, there are fewer differences. Both the 279 FC and DM285 can perform AC/DC voltage measurements to 1000V, as well as resistance measurements to 50 MΩ and frequency measurements to 100 kHz. Both tools offer continuity testing and diode testing. In addition, both are rated to IP40 for Ingress Protection.
