A good way to see heat & temperature distribution

The VT04A & VT04 are great equipments to see & watch the heat & temperature distribution in any area and on any object even if it is unreachable; inside a wall, under the floor...etc.

You will be safe using these equipments as you stay away from the heat source.

This product from Fluke could be used without the need of a training, this is great.

The product works great and is accurate, except for
detecting temperatures with stainless-steel pipe and tubing. Works fine for detecting temperature drops in steel pipes, where a clog may be in a boiler pipe, and also for heat exchangers to check temperatures and temperature drops in pipes. Works well for detecting overheated circuit breakers and fuses and for checking motors that drive conveyor belts with gearboxes to determine predictive maintenance and oil viscosity breakdown. Not being able to detect accurate temperatures with stainless steel is the only draw-back and was a great let down when trying to determine why the carbonation cooler wasn't working, since it is all stainless steel.

Unusual Application

I purchased three of these and donated them to our local volunteer fire department. They use them for "smoke checks" where there is a report of a possible fire but no visible fire. These have saved several homeowner's walls when the fire department was able to either pin point a problem or rule out a problem inside of a wall instead of just ripping everything apart on a search.

Also, they have been useful to search for hotspots at the end of a fire just to make sure they got it all.

The photo feature lets them document their findings to show why they took the action they did just to avoid issues later on.

Much cheaper than the really expensive official "fire fighter" thermal cameras that they can't afford and are very nearly as effective. The are also rugged enough to be used by a firefighter who's first priority isn't care of delicate, expensive electronics. The primary functions can be used by someone with bulky gloves on too.

Fluke is missing out on a good market for these devices.

I only gave it a 4 star rating because it takes so long to start up and because it saves it image files in a non-standard format.

Able-bodied intro Thermal imager/IR thermometer

I enjoy using my Fluke VT04 IR Thermometer. I use it for refrigeration component qualitative analysis during start-up and commissioning phases. It's not rated for operation in very cold ambients such as walk-in freezers though. The best features are the ability to capture the thermal images to memory card, and that it pinpoints the lowest and highest points of temperature within its field of view. The display also shows the coldest/warmest temps with digital readout. The blended images overlay a normal photograph image with the thermal image so the user can easily find their bearings on the image. The emissivity can be adjusted when highest accuracy is needed. The resolution is not super impressive, but for the price point I think it's very good. Compare with Flir, who also makes impressive thermal imagers.

The Fluke VT04 is a very versatile tool that is now priced to give give the homeowner basic thermal imaging capabilities. It is small and compact yet it can identify numerous issues from insulation to electrical. The VT04 does not have the thermal resolution of a high-end thermal imaging camera...but it does the job. There is an update firmware update that is available for download at fluke.com free of charge that is easy to install and will increase some of the functionality of your VT04.

FLUKE VT04 IR Thermometer

This Unit is Just what I needed for the Task I had at hand. I was having a Heat Issue in a set of Tunnel Lighting Panel Boards. We assumed that the Heat was cause by Harmonics & with the VT04 Not Only were we able to find the problem we had but was also able to find future problems Due to the Unbalanced load & wore insulation on the Feed wiring. I only gave this Unit 4 Stars due to the fact that you must be very close to the areas where the problems are or you get a lot of over feed from other devices. For the Money & what we were able to do with this unit after we figured out where & How close we had to be. Then it earned a 5 Star Rating all the way.

I purchased the VT04 in December with a list price of $1195 with a manufacturer's $400 rebate. The current list price as of today is $695 so the previous price was artificially high.

The VT04 performed well although the screen size could be a little larger. I plan to use it in automotive applications to pinpoint mechanical issues. There are a number of software features (color of heat map, emissivity,which are of limited value without calibration. One frustrating drawback on this instrument is that while it has a mini-usb connection for charging only, it does not connect via USB to your computer. In order to transfer thermal images to your computer, you must first remove the micro USB card, insert it into the SD card adapter and connect it to a SD card reader. Very time consuming. For an instrument of this cost, not having the proper drivers written and available is a cardinal sin. This will make firmware upgrades time consuming as well, if Fluke is even planning these.

I believe this design was released prematurely in light of possible competition from soon to be released infrared-capable cellphone cameras.

Great new product from Fluke!

I bought this as part of a rebate program Fluke had at the time. I wound up using this meter right away t check a bunch of heating radiators to see which ones were and were not working. The ability to switch back and forth between picture and thermal viewing, and the infrared temperature measuring made this job much easier. I can hardly wait to see what other jobs I can use this on to make temperature diagnostics easier!
