TPI Gas Detection Instruments FAQ

Do your instruments detect propane and natural gas?
Yes, all of our combustible gas detectors will detect propane, butane, natural gas as well as many other combustible gases.

What is the difference between the 720 and the HXG-2?
The HXG-2 is sensitive to 10 ppm of combustible gas and has an adjustable alarm to be used with the heat exchanger test kit. The 720 is sensitive to 50 ppm of combustible gas and has no alarm.

Will your instruments include a case?
The HXG-2 is supplied with a hard carrying case and the 720 is supplied with a soft pouch for protection.

Will the 710 give me efficiency readings on the high efficiency furnaces?
No. The efficiency formulas programmed into the instrument will not recognize the low stack temperatures. You would need the efficiency charts to match the oxygen readings with the stack temperature to calculate efficiency.

Does the 710 measure CO?
Yes, the 710 measures CO from 1 ppm to 2000 ppm.

Can you use the 710 on both oil furnaces and gas furnaces?
Yes, you can select from 8 different fuels.

I have a hard time finding a leak when on a rooftop in windy conditions. Will I be able to find a leak in these conditions with your leak detector?
Always remember that the refrigerant will travel with the wind. Position yourself downwind and work your way “up stream” in order to trace down a leak. The harder the wind is blowing the more the concentration of refrigerant will be diluted in the air. It is difficult to find these leaks, but it can be done.
