HOOTS ( High Output Optical Talk Set) are an LED based talk set that doubles as an LED light source that is calibrated to 20dBm. It is designed to work with multimode fiber, and will automatically adjust to compensate for fiber loss over a 20dB range of input light power.

The HOOTS headset uses OWL's light source technology to convert your voice into optical signals, eliminating the problems faced when using standard walkie talkies, such as channel competition and interference from walls or ambient noise. They can also be installed as a permanent part of a fiber network system. After installation, the HOOTS can be attached to a pair of dark fibers inside the fiber patch panel, allowing communications within the fiber cable closet when operations or management functions need to be done by IT.

These fiber communication systems are immune to EMI/RFI. The HOOTs system is much more secure than walkie talkies, since there is no chance of outside listeners picking up your conversations on their channel. This is especially true in IT, where crucial passswords or other information can be passed along on communications systems, making a secure communication system vital.
